Outside TV Portable Mount suggestion for small campers
One of the downsides of having a small TT is the lack of an outside TV. Because I didn’t want to drill into the outside wall of our new Starcraft’s fiberglass, my solution was to create a temporary mount that could attach to the outside window under the awning by using the inside TV on a removable swivel bracket!
Since our 17’ TT only has room inside for a 22” HD TV, it’s very light weight and easy to move from inside to out, but how to mount outside? People who handle large pieces of glass know how strong commercial suction-cups are, so why not a 12 pound TV! The items that make up this project, besides the LED TV, are the HD glass-holder (suction cups) and a pair of portable swivel TV mounts. Two TV mounts are needed if you plan to use the same TV inside & out, only using one swivel piece remaining on the TV and each of the wall mount pieces used for the inside wall and the other mounted to the suction cup handle for the outside.
To attach the outside bracket to the suction cup handle, you’ll need to file or grind flat any high points on the suction cup aluminum handle before drilling the handle to securely hold the bracket to receive the TV swivel, suggesting you use stainless-steel bolts with lock-nuts. With the receiver bracket having a built-in level, try to drill the bracket & handle as close to straight as possible to make positioning the TV on the outside glass simpler. The swivel piece on the TV has adjustments for tilting the TV angle.
Of course it’s necessary to have power for the TV wherever you’ll mount this, so don’t forget that and a cable TV connection or extra-long cable. In my case, i’ve run a splitter and cable from the camper cable connection on the opposite side. Our camper has a built-in WiFi booster and the radio has a built-in DVD player, so I’ve mounted an HDMI converter and an Apple TV to the back of our TV, so we can even stream movies where we have a great WiFi connection at the campground.
I’ve included links below for the handle & brackets, plus photos of the finished project. A couple of things to keep in mind: attach the suction cups to the stationary glass to be able to open the other window when desired and don’t attempt to attach those very strong suction cups to the siding, even if fiberglass, as it could deform the siding!
