Ok...what is this bar on my cable yoke?

Had to replace the left rear main cable on my 77 Starmaster 8. That was surprisingly easy...didn't have to go into the channel lift mechanism, just had to replace the cable from the yoke through the pulleys and into the bottom channel. There I only had to take it over the pulley in the top of the bottom channel and attach it with the large flathead bolt. Easy peazey! While under the camper and attaching the cable to the yoke, I finally figured out what was making the large bang every time I crank it up. There is a large curved rod attached to the yoke. It forms a loop inside the frame where the cables are run down the center of the camper. It looks like it was, at some point, attached to itself, but now it is just loose on the end. I will attach photos and hope someone can explain this conundrum to me. The loud bang scares me every time I raise it and I can't believe that this was designed like this.
